weakness in the insufficient supporting power of the ground

beneath the foundations of some of the structures which cir-

cumstance was specially referred to us when the bridges in

question showed sings of subsidence in 1908.

It was

So far as the masonry and concrete of the various

structures on the Railway are concerned we think it right in view

of the recent date of your appointment to explain that apart from

the type drawings which we originally sent to the Chief Resident

Engineer no questions of the design, working drawings or

execution of masonry or concrete of bridges have ever been

referred to us or been under our supervision in any way.

throughout understood that such matters, as also such questions

of foundations except as above mentioned were to be dealt with

by the local Staff of Engineers employed directly by Government.

Thus the only matters in connection with bridges which

have been under our control have been the design and manufacture

of girderwork in this country as it was from time to time

required under indents.

There is one point connected with the girderwork to

which we ought under the circumstances which have arisen to now

draw your attention, namely, the bearing area of girders on the

masonry. The dimensions of the bearing area were all of course

calculated on the assumption that the abutments would be built

of sound masonry or concrete but under the circumstances which

you have reported as to the quality of these you may think it

advisable that the weights resting on the abutments should be

further distributed which of course could be carried out in

various ways.

To prevent any future misunderstanding we should be

obliged if you would bring this letter to the notice of H. E.

the Governor.
